How To Organize: Master Closet

Time Frame: 8 labor hrs

Most Common Assignment: 4 hrs with 2 organizers / 2.66 hrs with 3 organizers

Step 1 Meet Client/Get Started

Time Frame: 15 minutes

  1. Meet client
  2. Walk into space
  3. Ask client if they have any special requests
  4. Ask client any questions needed as you look over the space
  5. Send client away so we can get to work
  6. Bring containers/bins/product inside

Step 2

Time Frame: 30-60 minutes (1-2 hr total)

  1. Hanging Clothing
  1. Switch out all hangers to matching hangers, if requested
    1. Step is completed in 1 hr if switching out minimal items
    2. Step is completed in 2 hr if switching out a high volume of hangers
  2. Face all clothing one direction
  3. Zip and button up all items fully
  4. Hang everything up and move clothing around on the rods sorting by type
  5. Wait on sorting by color, this happens at the end only if time

Step 3

Time Frame: 30 minutes (1 hr total)

  1. Clear out the closet
  • Empty everything out of the top and floor of the closet
  • Start sorting items by category as you pull it out to save time later

Step 4

Time Frame: 30 minutes (1 hr total)

  1. Add Bins
  • Place 2-8 matching bins at the top of the closet based on size of closet
  • Common categories for bins
  • Kids Closet – diapers, onesies, shorts, pants, pajamas
  • Master Closet – swim, ski, flip flops, summer, scarves, belts, travel
  1. Add bin clip to each bin
  2. Label each bin clip with a custom label from label maker

Step 5

Time Frame: 30 minutes (1 hr total)

  1. Jeans and Leggings
  • Place on open shelving if possible
  • Fold in half and in half again for easy maintenance
  • If no open shelving, these go in drawers/dresser

Step 6

Time Frame: 30 minutes (1 hr total)

  1. Shoes
  • Place shoe rack(s) at the bottom of the closet if needed
  • If shoes are not going on a shoe rack in this closet, skip this step
  • Closets often have a completely clear floor other than shoe racks
  1. The goal is to not have a cluttered floor in the closet

Step 7

Time Frame: 30 minutes (1 hr total)

  1. Finish anything up that is needed
  2. Closets often need one of the previous steps worked on more
  3. Closets may have sweaters, purses or other categories of items to address to completion

Step 8

Time Frame: 30 minutes (1 hr total)

  1. Capture after photos and video content / send to the office
  2. Return the final items to space after photos and videos are done
  3. Clean up the space and return any items to other parts of the house where needed
  4. Walk the client through their new space if they are home
  5. Lock up the home (if needed) and clock out
